Upheavals in the middle east, social unrest in Europe and challenges to austerity in Canada and Nova Scotia have once again highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with capitalism and renewed interest in the possibility and necessity of structural change.
Solidarity Halifax is an attempt to do activism differently. We are not a party of the old left, nor are we a coalition or an umbrella organization. We are a membership based organization which strives to make decisions democratically. All members participate actively in decision making and organizing.
Solidarity Halifax puts an emphasis on skill sharing and we strive to make sure that members can contribute in ways that they believe best take advantage of their skills and interests.
We are unique on the left in the degree to which our organization is multi-generational – our members range from students to veterans of the movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Sharing experiences across generations provides for a unique opportunity to create new ways of organizing while learning from the left’s past.
We believe that working together we can stem the tide and help rebuild a vital, vigorous and self-reflective left.
